NEWSLETTER 30apr13

-SB Lacrosse held its 2013 Alumni Game at LaValle Stadium, which included over 40 alumni in attendance, spanning from the Class of 1978 to the Class of 2012.

Before the contest, the team was given a guided tour through the facilities, including a tour of the Locker Room Project, a large-scale fundraiser for the program.



For Phase One of the Locker Room Project, participants were assigned a locker dedicated to their efforts, complete with a plaque and message of their choice above each locker.

Later, the Alumni suited up for an hour-long contest in LaValle Stadium.

The Red Team went on to defeat the White Team by a score of 6-5 to win the 2013 Alumni Game.


Chris Gignilliat '10 (#9) knocks down a pass in the crease.  Tom Bushy '01 (in goal) was brilliant in the cage for the Red Team and was awarded the game ball for his performance.





Jeff Capri '89 (in goal), an attackman, stepped in cage once again, turning away all shots except six.


The Organization thanks all of the participating alums for their continued support, and also Associate Athletic Director for External Services Rob Emmerich and Coach Nagle for their efforts.

Following the game, alums were invited into the VIP Suite in LaValle Stadium for refreshments and dinner.  The Varsity took on the Albany Great Danes, but fell by a score of 21-12.

The Organization extends very special thanks to those who contributed to the Locker Room Project and those who appeared on Alumni Day for the game and festivities.

Miguel Maysonet was projected to be chosen late in the NFL Draft, but instead signed with the Eagles as a free agent shortly after the draft.

Miguel Maysonet has performed for over 20 NFL scouts and attended Pro Day with the NY Giants and the NY Jets.

Carcaterra wrote that freshmen Brody Eastwood '16 and Challen Rogers '16 are the best freshman duo in college lacrosse.

In 2013, Miguel Maysonet engineered the first ever SB Football win over an FBS opponent against Army.

Dan Shaughnessy '16 (right), Bryan Judge '15 (center) and Tom Monzo '16 held Hartford to nine goals in over 60 minutes of play for the overtime win.

SB Lacrosse rises to 2-2 in the America East and is tied for second place.  The last four games have been decided by one goal, three of which were in overtime.

Senior Joe Laforet '13 won the overtime faceoff and immediately scored the game winning goal against Hartford.  Laforet has four goals in only six games this year.

Freshman goalie Dan Shaughnessy '16 makes a save against UMBC.  Shaughnessy registered twelve saves against Yale.

Freshman defenseman Tom Monzo '16 (left) has appeared in twelve games this year, starting three.  Monzo has scooped up 23 ground balls and caused 8 turnovers so far.

Junior goalie Brandon Maciejewski '18 lead Penn Yan HS to the NY State Class C final in 2012 and saved over 68% of shots.  Maciejewski has been on the varsity since the 8th grade, and starting since he was a freshman.

Bos said that Albany will need to: "find an answer" for Jeff Tundo '13 (center) and Brody Eastwood '17 (right).

Bos also covered the AE Player of the Year race, including both Jeff Tundo '13 and Brody Eastwood '17 in the top five selections.



Bos listed Jeff Tundo '13 as the third leading player currently in the AE.  Tundo has scored 24G, 18A in only ten games.

-Steven Nicastro and Liz Sobel of Levittown Patch reported on midfielder Gerard Cunningham '17 (Levittown, NY / MacArthur HS) signing an NLI to play for SB Lacrosse

Sobel said Cunningham is "an established football and basketball player... All-County football player and was the recipient of the Nassau Zone Award... for having exemplified outstanding physical performance, scholastic ability and leadership qualities."

Midfielder Ryan Bitzer '17 was named All-County as a junior in lacrosse, and is also an MVP All-Conference point guard and an All-County quarterback for Riverhead HS.

Riverheard HS coach Vic Guadagnino said Bitzer: “... is a very talented athlete... does the job in the classroom, on the court, and out on the field in multiple sports.  Not only is he a great athlete, but he is a very special person who is a pleasure to coach."


Ryan Bitzer '17 signs an NLI to play for SB Lacrosse.  The Riverhead News Review named Bitzer was the 2011-2012 Athlete of the Year.

Kevin Crowley '11 won the 2010 Enners Award for most outstanding player in the NCAA.  Crowley was also a Tewaraaton Finalist in 2011 and won the 2011 McLaughlin Award for most outstanding midfielder.

Mike Andreassi '15 leads the Seawolves into action against Binghamton this weekend.  So far in 2013, Andreassi has already tripled his point production from 2012.


-Stony Brook News announced the groundbreaking for the new Computer Science Building, to be built in between the current Computer Sciences school and Engineering, will contain faculty and administration offices, research and teaching laboratories, a large wireless teaching lab, and shared conference areas: http://commcgi.cc.stonybrook.edu/am2/publish/General_University_News_2/Stony_Brook_Commemorates_Groundbreaking_For_New_Computer_Science_Building.shtml


The planned Computer Science Building is a 70,000 square-foot facility to be completed later in 2013.  The National Research Council ranked the SB Department of Computer Science in the top 20 nationally for both graduate and undergraduate programs.  The Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET ranked the undergraduate program 15th nationwide and 2nd in New York State.

Shannon said Hayden Johnstone '17 (in goal) was "on fire" against #5 Calvert Hall.  The Hill Academy also upset #5 Gonzaga earlier in the week 7-6.
