SBU Lacrosse Remembers: Ron LaValle (1943-2010) 30dec10

On December 29th, 2010, former SB Coach Ron LaValle passed away at the Stony Brook University Hospital after battling cancer.

A tremendous loss for the entire lacrosse community, Ron was leaves behind his wife Cynthia.

Amongst Ron's many accomplishments, he was a retired attorney at law, a hospital executive, an officer in the Navy, an All America selection at Adelphi, an assistant coach at SB, and most recently a volunteer assistant at Patchogue HS on Long Island. He was also a proud father, brother, friend and a true lacrosse fanatic. He is a member of Suffolk County's LaValle Family, including New York Senator Kenneth P. LaValle, whose name graces SBU's LaValle Stadium.

As an attackman in the 1960s, Ron LaValle broke scoring records at Adelphi Lacrosse and is still one of the all-time assist leaders. Ron was inducted into the Adelphi Athletics Hall of Fame in 1996.

-A 1963 publication of The Delphian reported on the Panthers' 7-2 victory over Hofstra on May 8, 1963. LaValle scored with 4 seconds left in a chippy game. Well undersized, the article stated that "LaValle spent a good deal of time picking himself up off the turf." As an offensive assistant to John Espey's staff, Ron LaValle coached SB to its first ever America East Championship in 2002, including the first ever appearance in the Division I NCAA Tournament, and SB's first ever Division I All America, attackman Kevin Pall '02.
