OUT OF THE ARCHIVES: 2002 Cornell Game

-Ten years ago today, SB Lacrosse made its first ever appearance in the NCAA Division I Tournament. In its first season in the America East, the 2002 SB squad was invited to the NCAA Division I Tournament by virtue of winning the 2002 AE Championship, its first ever conference title in Division I.


Team captain Denis Scannell '02 registered 20G, 10A and also served as the team's primary faceoff specialist.

Lead by former coach John Espey, the Seawolves entered the America East Tournament seeded third, and knocked off Hartford in overtime to advance to the AE Final against Albany. The Seawolves then went on to defeat Albany by a score of 8-6 and automatically qualified for the NCAA Tournament.


Tris Gillen '02 (left) registered the game winning goal at Albany to advance SB Lacrosse to its first ever NCAA Division I Tournament berth.

SB went on to play Cornell in the NCAA First Round at Brown University. The game was also televised by MSG and Fox Sports NY.


Kevin Pall '02, the first Division I All America in SB Lacrosse history, scored 1G against Cornell. In 2002, Pall was the third leading scorer in the country.

Preseason All America goalie Steve Armsworthy '02 (left) and team captain Dan DaPonte '02 anchored the 2002 defense that surrendered only 8.2 goals per game. Armsworthy recorded 145 saves and 10 victories on the year, with a .562% save percentage (third best in Division I).

2005 Preseason All America defenseman Kyle Pearl '05 registered 4G, 6A during the 2002 season. Pearl was drafted into the MLL in 2005 by the San Francisco Dragons.


Eric Hatkewitz '04 was named Preseason All America at defensive midfield for the 2002 season. Hatkewitz scored 4G, 2A on the year with the longpole.

OUT OF THE ARCHIVES: 2010 Albany Game

-Lacrosse Playground reported on Lehigh shutting out Manhattan by a score of 13-0, and indicated it was the first NCAA Division I shutout since SB Lacrosse shut out Albany 15-0 in 2010. http://www.lacrosseplayground.com/mountain-hawks-pull-off-historic-13-0-shutout-vs-manhattan/

Back in April 2010, Marcus Henry of Newsday reported on SB shutting out arch-rival Albany in Albany, NY. http://www.newsday.com/sports/college/stony-brook-defeats-albany-15-0-in-men-s-lacrosse-1.1879785



In 2010, Charlie Paar '10 registered the first shutout for SB Lacrosse since the 1999 squad defeated Air Force 7-0 at home.

The victory clinched at least a share of the 2010 AE Regular Season Title and the top seed in the conference tournament with home field advantage. The Seawolves would go on to win the 2010 AE Championship against Albany to qualify for the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Attackman Tom Compitello '11 registered 5G, 2A in the shutout victory against Albany in 2010.


The 2010 SB starting defense consisted of Chris Gignilliat '10, Mike Sopko '10, and Bryan Reinert '11, anchored by Charlie Paar '10 in cage. At defensive midfield was Steve Waldeck '10, Jared LeVerne '12, and Vonzel Legall '11.

Including this victory, SB Lacrosse went on a 17 regular season game winning streak against America East opponents, extending back to 2009.
SB Lacrosse has defeated Albany seven times in a row dating back to 2009.

-Jeff Seidel of the Baltimore Sun referred to the 2010 Albany game while covering the Johns Hopkins shutout victory over Manhattan College, 11-0. Seidel described the event as the first NCAA shutout "since Stony Brook beat Albany, 15-0, on April 24, 2010." http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/lacrosse/bs-sp-johns-hopkins-manhattan-0307-20120306,0,635438.story

The last time SB Lacrosse registered a shutout, it was against Air Force Academy in 1999. Freshman goaltender Jon Dobias '02 registered 12 saves in the contest to preserve the shutout, in only his second start.

SB also shut out Southampton College on March 20, 1990 by a score of 20-0. Four time team MVP Rob Serratore '92 minded the cage to preserve the shut out victory.
